Isn’t a “Time Piece ”the same thing as a “Clock”? After all, they both tell time? Technically yes, they both do tell time. But one very subtle difference between the two is that a “Time Piece” typically refers to a “Watch”, often either a “Pocket Watch” or a “Wrist Watch”. And although “Time Pieces” keep time, they don’t“ Strike”. A “Clock” will “Strike”, usually on the hour, but sometimes on other time increments. Clocks can include “Tall Case Clocks”, “Grandfather Clocks”, “Mantle Clocks” “Calendar Clocks”, “Regulator Clocks”, and many other clock forms. But although most people prefer a working clock to a non-working clock, it’s not uncommon for many people to disable the clock’s “Strike Mechanism” so they don’t have to hear the clock striking throughout the night. WHAT’S IT WORTH? Clock and Time Piece values can range widely, depending upon the age, form, maker, case, movement, and of course condition. Recently a contemporary circa 1985 Ridgeway Tall Case Clock sold at Auction for $475.00.
